Okrika - Borikiri Bridge Project Enters Active Construction Phase as Demolition Begins

By Atamuno Sunny
The long-awaited Okrika–Borikiri Bridge Project has reached another significant milestone, with the demolition of structures along the Okrika axis officially underway, signalling the transition from planning and preparatory works to active construction.
A visit to the project site by Wakirike Herald correspondents revealed demolition teams actively clearing structures located within the approved construction corridor, marking one of the most critical stages in the delivery of what is widely regarded as one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in Rivers State.
The commencement of demolition follows the successful completion of the compensation process for affected property owners, paving the way for the next phase of construction.
Property Owners Confirm Compensation
Several property owners whose buildings fall within the project's right-of-way confirmed to Wakirike Herald that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) paid compensation before demolition commenced.
The timely payment of compensation allowed the exercise to proceed peacefully, with many affected residents expressing appreciation that due process was observed before work began.
For many observers, the orderly manner in which the exercise has been conducted demonstrates the Commission's commitment to balancing infrastructure development with the rights and welfare of affected communities.
Residents Welcome Visible Progress
The atmosphere across Okrika has been one of cautious optimism as residents witnessed visible activity on a project that has remained a long-held aspiration for generations.
Several residents who spoke with Wakirike Herald described the commencement of demolition as a historic turning point, saying it provided tangible evidence that the long-envisioned bridge is finally becoming a reality.
Many expressed hope that the project would improve mobility, stimulate economic activities, and strengthen social and commercial ties between Okrika, Borikiri, and the greater Port Harcourt metropolis.
For many, the sight of heavy equipment moving into the construction corridor represented far more than demolition—it symbolised progress.
Contractor Reaffirms Commitment
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of Promax Nigeria Limited, Mr. Wilson John Daka, stated that compensation for all affected structures had been duly paid before demolition commenced.
He assured residents that construction is progressing in accordance with the approved project implementation schedule and reaffirmed the contractor's commitment to delivering the bridge in line with established engineering standards and specifications.
His remarks offered further reassurance that the project continues to advance according to plan.
A Critical Engineering Milestone
From an engineering perspective, the clearance of the approved right-of-way represents one of the most important phases of any major bridge construction project.
The exercise provides the space required for site preparation, equipment mobilisation, geotechnical investigations, foundation works, utility relocation, and other essential engineering activities necessary before the bridge's superstructure can begin to take shape.
With demolition now underway, the project has officially entered one of its most visible and significant stages.
A Bridge Expected to Transform the Region
When completed, the Okrika–Borikiri Bridge is expected to fundamentally transform transportation between Okrika and Port Harcourt.
The project will provide a direct road connection that is anticipated to reduce travel time, improve connectivity, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and stimulate commercial activities throughout the region.
Beyond transportation, analysts believe the bridge could become a major catalyst for economic growth.
Improved accessibility is expected to encourage investment, strengthen local businesses, expand tourism opportunities, and improve access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.
The bridge is also projected to strengthen Wakirike's maritime economy by improving access to fishing communities, waterfront businesses, marine support services, and other blue economy activities that have sustained the people of Wakirike for generations.
From Vision to Reality
For decades, the Okrika–Borikiri Bridge has featured prominently in discussions about the future development of Wakirike and the wider Rivers State.
With compensation completed and demolition now visibly underway, many residents believe the project has crossed an important threshold—from aspiration to implementation.
While significant work still lies ahead, the commencement of this phase has renewed confidence that one of the region's most anticipated infrastructure projects is steadily moving towards completion.
As construction progresses, expectations remain high that the bridge will become a lasting symbol of connectivity, economic transformation, and regional development, delivering benefits not only to Okrika and Borikiri but to Rivers State as a whole.
Wakirike Herald will continue to monitor developments on the project, providing readers with verified, timely, and comprehensive updates as work advances.
