Museum Restoration Project Unearths 200-Year-Old War Canoe
By Sokari Fyneface· 4 July 2026
Workers restoring the community museum's roof uncovered a war canoe believed to be more than 200 years old, stored beneath a disused annex and forgotten for decades.
Historians say the canoe's carved prow matches descriptions in oral accounts of nineteenth-century trade disputes along the creek. Conservation experts have been called in to stabilise the wood before public display.
'This is the kind of find that rewrites how confidently we can date our own oral history,' said museum curator Diseye Green.
