Linguists Complete First Wakirike-English Digital Dictionary
By Dumo Green· 4 July 2026
A five-year collaboration between linguists and community elders has produced the first digital Wakirike-English dictionary, containing more than 6,000 entries, each with an audio pronunciation recorded by a native speaker.
The project was motivated by concern that the language was being spoken fluently by fewer young people each year. 'If it's not written down and recorded, we lose it in one generation,' said lead linguist Dr. Preye Fyneface.
The dictionary will be freely available online and is already being piloted in two primary schools as a teaching aid.
