Okrika Jetty Tragedy: Wakirike National Congress Mourns, Demands Full Investigation

By Wakirike Herald
The Wakirike National Congress (WNC), the apex socio-cultural organisation of Wakirike people worldwide, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths recorded at Okari Jetty in Okrika on Thursday, September 3, 2026, describing the incident as a devastating loss to the Wakirike Nation.
The tragedy has left families grieving and communities searching for answers, amid conflicting accounts circulating on social media about what happened in the early hours of that morning.
Concerned by the uncertainty surrounding the incident, the WNC said it dispatched a fact-finding team to Okari Ama on Saturday, September 5, to speak with members of the host community and establish a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
WNC Seeks Facts Before Drawing Conclusions
According to the organisation, members of the community shared their experiences and concerns with the visiting team, particularly regarding the challenges faced by the host community.
However, the WNC said it would not rush to conclusions.
The organisation stressed that it would refrain from making a definitive statement until the facts surrounding the tragedy had been properly established.
What it considers beyond dispute, however, is the enormous human cost.
The loss of what the organisation described as energetic and vibrant young men represents an “inestimable loss” to the Wakirike people and a tragedy it described as both heartbreaking and avoidable.
Families Left to Grieve
For the families affected, the tragedy is more than a public incident.
It means the sudden loss of sons, brothers, husbands, fathers and loved ones whose lives and futures have now been cut short.
The WNC extended its condolences to the bereaved families and affected communities, saying the scale of the loss represents a devastating blow to the people.
It also expressed solidarity with the mothers, fathers and children now facing the painful aftermath.
“May the souls of the departed find eternal rest,” the organisation said.
WNC Demands Transparent Investigation
The WNC has called on the Rivers State Government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately commence a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the incident.
It wants authorities to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, determine the cause of the deaths and make the findings public.
For the people of Okrika, the organisation said, the truth is not optional.
It is a matter of justice.
Survivors Need Urgent Medical Care
The WNC also called for immediate and comprehensive medical attention for survivors of the incident, particularly those said to remain in critical condition.
Beyond emergency treatment, the organisation urged authorities and relevant institutions to consider the longer-term needs of those affected as they recover from the tragedy.
It further demanded adequate compensation and sustained support for bereaved families, including educational trusts and livelihood restoration programmes.
Such assistance, it said, should be regarded as a matter of justice rather than charity.
Secure Pipelines and Facilities
The organisation also called on NNPCL and other relevant agencies to immediately secure pipelines and petroleum facilities in the area.
The WNC said stronger protection and monitoring of such infrastructure was necessary to reduce the possibility of another tragedy occurring.
But for the organisation, securing facilities alone will not address the deeper issues facing communities in the Niger Delta.
Beyond the Tragedy: A Call for Opportunity
The WNC argued that the recurring dangers confronting young people in oil-producing communities cannot be separated from the wider realities of unemployment, poverty and limited economic opportunities.
It therefore called on the Federal and Rivers State governments to invest more meaningfully in Wakirike communities through inclusive development, employment opportunities and sustainable economic empowerment.
Behind every statistic, the organisation noted, are families struggling to survive.
And when young people are left with few viable economic options, desperation can push them toward dangerous livelihoods.
The WNC said Nigeria must confront these underlying conditions rather than responding only after lives have been lost.
Appeal for Calm
As investigations and calls for justice continue, the organisation appealed to residents to remain calm and exercise restraint.
It said the pursuit of justice must be conducted through lawful and peaceful means.
The WNC, however, made clear that it would continue pressing for answers.
“The Okari Jetty (Okrika) tragedy is a national disgrace,” the organisation said, arguing that the Niger Delta has powered Nigeria's economy for decades while many of its communities continue to face poverty and limited opportunities.
For the Wakirike National Congress, the central question is no longer simply what happened at Okari Jetty.
It is also why young people should continue to face life-threatening risks in their struggle to earn a living—and what must be done to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
The WNC says it will not be silent. And it will not forget.
