Inside the Revival of Handwoven Raffia Fashion Among Young Designers
By Ibiba Amachree· 23 June 2026
A new generation of young designers is reviving handwoven raffia fashion, blending techniques learned from grandmothers with contemporary streetwear silhouettes.
What was once seen mainly in ceremonial dress is now appearing in bucket hats, bags, and jacket trims sold through social media storefronts to buyers well beyond the kingdom.
'Our grandmothers wove raffia because it was what was available. We weave it now because it's beautiful and it's ours,' said 23-year-old designer Karibo Fyneface.
