A youth innovation challenge awarded its top prize of ₦5 million to a startup building low-cost soil moisture sensors for smallholder farmers, beating out eleven other finalists.
The winning team, all recent graduates, developed a sensor that costs a fraction of imported alternatives and sends readings to farmers via text message, requiring no smartphone or data plan.
'We built this for farmers like our own parents, who would never be able to afford the imported version,' said team lead Boma Wokoma.
