Army Pledges Stronger Security For Corps Members Travelling To Rivers

By Wakirike Herald
The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has pledged to strengthen security measures for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to Rivers State for orientation exercises.
The General Officer Commanding the division, Maj.-Gen. Everest Okoro, gave the assurance on Sunday when the Rivers State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Moses Oleghe, led a delegation to the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Okoro expressed concern over the security risks faced by corps members travelling to their places of primary assignment across the country, saying the division would continue to support efforts to protect those arriving in Rivers.
“The division will continue to strengthen security measures to address threats to corps members, particularly during their arrival in Rivers for orientation exercises,” he said.
Protecting A Platform For National Unity
The GOC described the NYSC scheme as a national asset that brings young Nigerians from different ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds together.
He said the scheme provided an important platform for national cohesion, mutual understanding and cultural integration, while commending corps members for their contributions to nation-building.
His assurance places attention on the journeys corps members undertake to begin their service. For those posted to Rivers, cooperation between the NYSC and security agencies could help address threats during their arrival for orientation.
However, the assurance was not accompanied by details of the additional measures, their implementation timetable or the travel routes they would cover.
NYSC Seeks Continued Cooperation
Okoro commended Oleghe for maintaining cooperation with the Nigerian Army, describing him as a dedicated officer working to sustain the relationship between both institutions.
Earlier, Oleghe thanked the GOC for supporting the scheme despite his recent posting to the state.
He explained that the visit was intended to strengthen the existing relationship between the Rivers NYSC and the 6 Division.
The coordinator appealed for continued support and an open-door policy to facilitate cooperation, saying a stronger partnership would enhance the safety and well-being of corps members serving in Rivers.
The pledge provides an assurance to incoming corps members and their families. Its practical value will depend on how the promised measures translate into safer journeys and effective support for those who encounter security threats.
